History of Quiet Noise

At the most recent Quiet Noise (the annual backyard show focusing on un/low amplified experimental music), there was discussion over the traditional veg biriyani about how many events there had been, what had happened during COVID, who played when and with whom. Ernie Althoff thinks he has been to all of them except one, and he praised the consistent quality of the series over the years. I struggled to remember some details, so decided to go back through the archives and pull some details together.

RADIO SPECIAL

On the recent occasion of my 50th birthday, Nat Grant put together this radio special on some of my collaborative work for her Let Your Freak Flag Fly show on 3CR. It features collaborative recordings introduced by Ernie Althoff, Chun-Liang Liu, Paul Kidney and Adam Simmons.  It was such a surprise (kept secret from me until the day!) to hear this lovely programme, my thanks to Nat and all my inspiring collaborators everywhere.

Listen to the programme here.

New track on community fundraiser album for 3CR

I have a previously-unreleased track on this new digital album Let Your Freak Flag Fly: 3CR Community Radio Compilation #1.

My track “Three Turntables from Ernie” was recorded in December 2017, working with three stripped-down turntables and Tibetan bells generously gifted to me by Ernie Althoff.

The album also features Ernie Althoff, as well as Robin Fox, Facetoucher, Furchick, Judith Hamann, Mary Doumany, David Brown, and many more. All proceeds go to Melbourne community radio station 3CR.

samplepack

Great Rack “sample pack” digital – Looking for a lockdown project? Great Rack comes to the rescue with the release of “sample pack”, a pack of 100 free samples, that Emily Bennett invites you to do with what thou whilt. The A3 Korg Signal Processing Rack was the mainstay of Great Rack, the alias of Emily Bennett, in the improvising experimental trio Great Rack and an Empty Club Reverb. The machine’s 1988 volatility has been distilled into a downloadable pack of 100 vocal samples ready to be chopped and sampled for future music and beat making.

New video “Vigil”

Vigil is a new video I made for Make It Up Club’s online concert series, where it premiered last night.

Two of the drums featured were generously given to me by Nat Grant, and the coral chimes were made by Ernie Althoff.

in-Stability: Ernie Althoff

in-Stability is a performance series running Thursday nights through August and September as part of my Stability exhibition, where artists from a variety of disciplines are invited to perform with my kinetic sound sculpture and projection works.

Ernie Althoff has been building experimental musical instruments for nearly four decades. He has been a key influence on my work with kinetic sound sculpture, both through Althoff’s own turntable-driven machines, and as a mentor and advisor. Althoff will perform in duet with my sound sculptures.
