History of Quiet Noise

At the most recent Quiet Noise (the annual backyard show focusing on un/low amplified experimental music), there was discussion over the traditional veg biriyani about how many events there had been, what had happened during COVID, who played when and with whom. Ernie Althoff thinks he has been to all of them except one, and he praised the consistent quality of the series over the years. I struggled to remember some details, so decided to go back through the archives and pull some details together.

‘Relativity/Only’ Album Launch

Relativity/Only Album Launch
Thursday 25 March 2021, 8:30pm
Avalon Bar, 387 Brunswick St, Fitzroy
$10

My new album Relativity/Only (Nice Music/Shame File Music) will be launched later this month at Avalon (former site of Polyester Records). I will be constructing the sound sculpture that generated the music for the album (three turntables with suspensions and objects) for the event, and hopefully playing the tracks on Side A of the album on a “loop”, so to speak.

I will also be joined by Nick Ashwood and Michael McNab, and we’ll then play a “quartet” with the sound sculpture.

This will be my first live performance since September 2019!

Rehearsing with Nick & Michael

Relativity/Only is available now from Shame File Music and Nice Music.

Music Under Lockdown: Melbourne 2020

Music Under Lockdown: Melbourne 2020 is a new digital compilation album I’ve compiled, collecting recordings made by Melbourne musicians over the recent months of COVID-19 lockdown.

Included is a new duo recording with myself and Nick Ashwood:

This was the last time I played music with another person (July 2020) in the same room at the time of writing. Nick was visiting Melbourne and we quickly teed up a jam, just as the second lockdown was rolling out. My suburb was in lockdown, but my studio was nearby in a non-lockdown postcode. We met there and played for a couple of hours. This was the first time we’d played together as a duo. Nick was staying in North Melbourne, and it was announced that evening that suburb would be locked down at midnight. Within a week or two the whole city was as well.
