Also on Monday 15 February at La Mama Courthouse Theatre is ‘If I Am A Musical Thinker’:
#DYSWIH presents Ben Boretz’s ‘If I am a musical thinker’ at La Mama Musica with Brigid Burke (visuals), Warren Burt (electronics), Carmen Chan (cello, percussion), Llara Goodall (tape), Clinton Green (speaker), Adam Simmons (wind instruments), and Gary Verkade (recorded voice).
Originally written for graduate music students at the University of Texas, Austin in 1981, Ben Boretz’s ‘If I am a musical thinker’ is a statement of the aesthetic, social and spiritual credo of the American composer and theorist himself. He proposes that artistic expression answers primal human needs for experiencing identity through ariticulation in artistic media; and further, that theoretical reflection is constructively or deconstructively crucial to expression and is itself expressive in nature. The text is one of the inspirations to this project ten years ago.

Quiet Noise IV
The Quiet Noise house/backyard show tradition of unamplified experimental music and jumbo veg biriyanis enters its fourth year with an unprecedented battle of two of Melbourne’s most out-there large form improvising groups.
The Paul Kidney Experience is a raging psychedelic beast who routinely destroy eardrums and blow minds with their high volume jams, but on this occasion they have accepted the Quiet Noise challenge to perform sans-speakers, unplugged for the first time. But do not expect introspective acoustic guitars played seated on bar stools…The PKE on this occasion will feature Don Rogers, Matt Gleeson, Lloyd Honeybrook, Ben Butcher, Nell Day, Peter James, Rodney J Cooper, Dave ‘The Hitter’ Bullock, and Paul Kidney.
THIS Ensemble is a constantly-shifting improvising organism manifested by Ren Walters. The line-up is never the same, and has incorporated dancers, actors, visual artist, puppets as well as some of Melbourne’s most adventurous musicians, often performing over long periods of time.
Free entry/free music (you may want to kick in a few dollars for a share in a jumbo veg biriyani afterwards).
