“A Conduit” out now (CD and digital)

A Conduit consists of three linked works honed from Green’s recent explorations of broken Walkmans playing themselves.

Loose internal speakers from the Walkmans are positioned between the spindle and play-head. The parts cling together magnetically, yet are agitated by the turning spindle, creating not-quite-regular rhythms punctuated by magnetic/electronic interference. Green gently nurtures this kinetic and sonic phenomena by changing the positioning of the Walkmans, and applying subtle EQ and effects. The musical results are accompanied by episodes of aleatorically-constructed cassette collages, processed text and turntables.

Clinton Green/Ian Andrews “False Currency” out now

My new collaboration with Ian Andrews (Astasie-abasie, The Horse He’s Sick, Cut With The Kitchen Knife) is called False Currency. It’s out now on Italian label Tsss Tapes. Francisco from Tsss actually proposed this collaboration between Ian and I; he’s obviously got a good ear for these kind of things.

False Currency is available digitally via Bandcamp, and on a limited edition of 100 cassettes. For those in Australia, Shame File Music will be getting copies of the cassette in stock soon.

Ian and I will also be playing together live at Make It Up Club (Bar Open – upstairs, 317 Brunswick St, Ftizroy) on Tuesday 6 December, 2022.

“Archive” series digital release

The Archive series comprises ten volumes, issued on CDR from 2002-2013.  The series collects out-of-print, rare and previously-unreleased material of my musical output (largely under the Undecisive God moniker), beginning with nascent recordings made from 1991 through to 2007.

Primarily a private archival project, it has only been issued previously via on-demand CDRs. The CDR format will now be discontinued as the series moves to Bandcamp over coming months. The first two editions are now available on that platform, along with original liner notes:

Archive 1: 1991-4 (sham017) includes the debut cassette The Difference Between Light and Shadow in its entirety, plus some previously unreleased material and compilation tracks.

Archive 2: 1994-5 (sham019) features Undecisive God’s second release The Celestial Emporium of Benevolent Knowledge, plus 3 other compilation tracks and an early version unreleased of “Hallowed Be Thy Name”.

More will be added to the Shame File Music Bandcamp page over coming weeks/months.

New compilation track

New track composed and recorded for this themed percussion compilation from Italian label tsss tapes Free Percussion/Water. The compilation also features Ted Byrnes, Jeph Jerman and other exploratory percussionists of note.

I’m also looking forward to releasing a collaborative album with Ian Andrews (Astasie-abasie, Cut With The Kitchen Knife, The Horse He’s Sick, etc) on tsss tapes later this year.

Clinton Green & Barnaby Oliver live album out today

The 10th and final instalment of the Surface Noise series is out today. Wow, what a journey. The first volume of this split series between Shame File Music and Iceage Productions came out in 2014, each one is a split between two artists contributing live recordings. How it worked is that me and Peter James would invite the initial artist, then that artist would nominate someone else to share their release with, a concept I always liked. And the final one, Surface Noise Vol. 10, appropriately is a split between me (with Barnaby Oliver) and Peter. Mine and Barnaby’s track is a live recording from an intimate performance at LongPlay in 2019 (seems so long ago now), and Peter’s is from Make It Up Club in 2012 (that IS a long time ago!) “Here?/Secret” out now digitally and on limited edition cassette

Here?/Secret (Shame File Music) is anew work of tape compositions reimagining voice and the reverberant influence of collaboration.

The seeds of this project were planted during Melbourne’s hard COVID lockdown of 2020, when I could not access my studio and the majority of my equipment. After several months of not making any new music, I felt it imperative to do SOMETHING, and looked at what I had around me at home:

– An old Tascam 4-track cassette porta-studio
– Some cheap Walkmans
– Some cassettes that had been generated over several performances and rehearsals around 2015-16.

I devised a compositional procedure for laying out excerpts from these cassettes on the 4-track tape, including changes of tape speed, panning, tape reversal (by flipping the master cassette), changing tracks, etc. I also included some field recordings of local frog populations, and a recording of record gifted to me by Kerrie Farnsworth, who had found it in a drain in Kiev. I transferred the results in bulk to digital and slowly edited them down with a more conscious and less-process driven aesthetic driving the resulting compositions. The results regularly astounded me as I played them back; this feels like something completely different from what I’ve previously created, and in that spirit I’ve decided to share them.

Voices include Jen Callaway, Chun-liang Liu, Michael McNab, Shani Mohini-Holmes, Elnaz Sheshgelani, Tony Yap, and others unknown/anonymous.Available digitally and as a limited edition cassette/art object hand-made by visual artist, Simon Fisher. Each cassette case has been transformed by into a unique object d’art, with a painted cassette case featuring a unique cover, containing further unique full colour sleeve and inserts, plus liner notes. Hand-numbered edition of 17 copies only.

THIS Ensemble “My Umbrella Is Another Word for Community” digital/CDR out now

“My Umbrella Is Another Word for Community” is a kind of appendix to THIS Ensemble’s sprawling “Brown Paper Business” double album released earlier this year. “My Umbrella…” was recorded live in 2014, and like the group at the time, is alternatively frenetic and deeply meditative. “My Umbrella…” is available on CDR, which neatly fits inside the “Brown Paper Business” limited edition wooden box as well (purchase the “Brown Paper Business” boxset and get “My Umbrella…” free if you haven’t already).
