Dotabata/Llara Goodall ‘Surface Noise Vol. 5’ CDR – Dotabata emits a short, sharp, lo-fi noise scuzz performance (from the International Noise Conference 2013), followed by Llara Goodall’s tape abuse/worship of pop music through the cassette meat grinder. Limited edition of 50 hand-numbered copies.

bothsides

Ross Manning ‘Both Sides of the Cocoon’ cassette – More recent work of Manning’s incredible use of light and kinetic sculpture to create incredibly complex, organic and beautiful music. Limited edition of 40 copies in beautiful handmade covers, each unique, using coloured transparent and textured papers put together by the ever-reliable Chemical Imbalance label.
dumb

Dumb & the Ugly – 12″ MLP Early 1990s Melbourne instrumental/exploratory supergroup made up of Michael Sheridan (guitars), Dave Brown (bass) and John Murphy (drums), laying down chunky chugga-chugga rhythms. This 12″ 45 vinyl was originally released in 1990, and a nice stash has been made available again to Shame File Music. Includes a bonus poster whilst stocks last
atmospheres

Dumb & the Ugly – “Atmospheres of Metal” CD Brutal power trio grooves and riffage interspersed with noise collages of tapes where the previous riffs reverberate with other samples. Originally released in 1992, and the band’s swan song before various members went on to projects like Max Q and Bucketrider
panaretos

Tim Panaretos “Schmørgåsbaag & Other Furniture” CDR Ex-Tassie-now-Melbournite Panaretos approaches the bouzouki through a free jazz lens whilst never completely disregarding the instrument’s traditional patterns and timbres. Limited edition of 25 copies housed in unique hand-painted/designed sleeves, assembled by the always-immaculate Chemical Imbalance label.

guthrie-people

Will Guthrie “People Pleaser” LP – Guthrie’s latest is part mash-up, part collage, incorporating snippets of records and recordings of obscure sources with Guthrie’s percussion. An incredible departure from an endlessly-inventive artist. It’s a game changer. Limited copies available.

fifteen

Ernie Althoff “Fifteen” CD – Althoff takes a formal compositional approach to six of his classic percussive machines, pairing them in the fifteen permutations of the title. These tracks are subtle and gentle, yet rich in complexity through their interlocking rhythmic patterns and ‘solos’ engineered later in the mix by Althoff. No mysteries of slight-of-hand here; Althoff details his compositional process in the liner notes, and each machine is photographed to show its workings.

Tarab – “An Incomplete Yet Fixed Idea” LP – Eamon Sprod excels in the careful arrangement of ‘sonic rubbish’; field recording-based compositions full of textural and sonic juxtapositions. This album draws on recording made from 2011 to 2016. Limited edition of 300 on 180 gram vinyl with download card, comes in a sleeve with minimalist artwork by Romain Cadihon.

Absurd Cosmos Late Nite “Final Lives” cassette – The final two live performances from Mark Groves’ conceptual solo project, recorded at Melbourne venues in 2017.
